So there’s these two young guys, super fit, on their way to the Olympics and about as excited as Tony Abbot discovering a new piece of bad news about our economy; which, by the way, is pretty damned excited.
They’re in the US and have a few hours of freedom.
They wander onto a gun shop.
Now gun shops are something with which these boys aren’t all that familiar.
In Australia, we – wisely – ensure we keep our gunshops low key. They’re usually located on run down industrial estates in between purveyors of adult fun stuff and plumbing material wholesalers. (Which could be just different names for the same kind of business, for all I know).
But gunshops in the land of the free, well that’s a cat of a different persuasion. They tend to be brightly lit, enticing, with haul-your-ass-in-here facades, something like a Toys-R-Us on steroids.
So anyway, they wander in, and there they are – guns. All kinds of ‘em. Big shiny ones, little deceitfully innocent looking numbers and all shapes and sizes in between.
Young men are fascinated by guns. Maybe even a fair few young women are too. Hey, it’s possible.
Well, why wouldn’t they be? They get to use simulated guns in every other computer game. Half the shows on TV have guns going off like Blues supporters on a good night. They see cops wearing them on their hips.
So they go in and have their pix taken with a couple of biggies over their shoulders.
And for that, it’s suggested that they should be kicked off the Olympic team.
And then they fail to anticipate the Sxxxt storm that was always going to happen if this wicked behavior got out, and put said pics on Facebook.
So, they lacked foresight. They’re young men, for God’s sake. It’s in their job description to lack foresight.
But good old Swimming Australia is considering a sanction because the image is “Inappropriate”. Inappropriate for what?
Is it barely possible – not probable – but possible, say a bit more possible than the likelihood of Alan Jones sounding intelligent…
Is it that possible that we’re being just a tad precious about this entire episode?
