At elevenses the other day, there was trouble in the schoolyard.
See, Julia – she’s school captain – used to be friends with Christine.
Christine is the leader of another gang, mostly nerdy kids who have all these facts and know stuff. All the other kids hate ‘em.
Bobby used to be the leader of that gang and he started to like Julia back when they were choosing the school captain.
See, it came down to Julia or a skinny kid named Tony.
Now, Tony’s not that bright, and he likes to yell stuff at other kids. Usually it’s the same stuff over and over again. That’s because Tony has Tourette Syndrome. He doesn’t twitch or anything, but every few minutes he yells something.
It’d be funny except that Tony only knows a couple of phrases so now it’s got boring.
Anyway, Julia and Bobby became best friends. And then Julia invited some other kids who weren’t in any gangs to sort of be part of her gang.
Then she and Bobby and the other kids ganged up on Tony and next thing Julia got picked to be school captain.
Tony put on a big sook and was just mean to everybody, but Julia and Bobby started to sit together during the breaks.
When Bobby left the school, Christine got to lead that gang, and for a while she and Julia were best friends.
So, anyway, even though Julia and Tony weren’t really talking, they just about worked out how to play a new game called, “Bye Bye the Boats.”
But Christine and her gang wouldn’t agree to the rules.
So this big kid named Joel got stuck into Christine. Some of the other kids in Julia’s gang thought that was really good. This one kid named Martin – he’s got red hair and freckles and a pointy nose – he yelled stuff at Christine and her gang, and, woouugh, did they get mad.
Next thing, Julia and Tony got together to see if they could get Chrisine’s friends kicked out of the school. Julia and Tony still hated each other, only now they hated Christine more.
But Christine doesn’t care. She’s just on herself coz she thinks she’s always right.
Anyway, soon we’ve got to pick a new school captain and it’s going to be really hard.
Julia gave a lot of her allowance to all different kids but a lot of them told her she could stick it.
Everyone’s starting to hate Julia, and now she hates Tony and Christine.
Joel and Martin hate Christine and Tony, but they don’t like Julia much either.
Tony hates everybody except the kids with heaps of allowance, but Martin likes those kids too and some of them pretend to like him, but they don’t really.
Christine hates Julia because Julia says she hates her. But Christine hates Tony even more than she hates Julia.
And Sarah says she’ll like whoever Christine likes.
It’s not easy being a kid.
But some grownups do a pretty good job of it.
